Like
many Sri Lankan towns and villages Kurunegala is centered
on a lake. Many a treasure hunter has lost his life
diving for an elusive golden tray supposed to be buried
in the lake bed. But what's truely special about Kurunegala
is the huge rocks that encroach on the city from all
sides. These very same rocks made Kurunegala a defensible
retreat for Sri Lankan kings during difficult times.
Today,
Kurunegala is best known for
its large coconut plantations, paddy fields
and a thriving used motorcycle business!.
The
road from Colombo to the ancient cities of Sigiriya,
Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura passes through Kurunegala.
Many often stop over to picnic by the lake or climb
one of the many rocks that surround the city.
Typical
green tropical forests along the roadside from Polgahawela
to Kurunegala.
