Today
Galle is a sleepy town on the south coast. But during
it's heyday when the Dutch ruled Sri Lanka, Galle
was the Capital city.
The old Dutch fort is now a world heritage site, and
still stands in it's old glory. Galle lies strategicaly
on the main east-west shipping routes. The dutch gained
control of trade in most of south and south-east asia
by controlling the Galle Harbour.
Once
the British ousted the Dutch the capital was shifted
to Colombo. However they continued to occupy the old
Dutch fort and made many additions including a light
house and a clock tower.
Descendants
of the British and Dutch rulers still live within the
fort.
Galle
is a place for relaxing and for sightseeing.
And the beach resort, Unawatuna
is just 10 minutes away.
